They Brought the Biggest, Clearest Walnut I’ve Ever Seen

Welcome back for another sawmill adventure, this time with some more special guests. Today Chad from Midwest Woodturners and Colten from Down to Earth Tree Service are here, and they brought some giant logs.

They partnered up on a massive removal of some dying walnut residential trees in River Falls, Wisconsin. Two trees produced the four massive logs here, and today we will be cutting up the butt log, which is one of the smaller logs. Chad and Colten can’t stay for a full day, so I figured we would start with a simple, quick, and easy one. So we will get it sliced up and see what’s inside!

It’s wood! It has a little mini-burl thing going on there, otherwise it’s just clear walnut.

This one has this really cool pruning cut where the tree has completely healed up that wound. Plus it has some knots. Other than that… pretty clear walnut. In terms of measurements, this slab is 33 inches at the very top and 41 inches at the bottom. So this will make a whole tabletop slab.

This one’s got this really cool bark inclusion coming through at the top. This slab also has the pith line going straight up, so it’s quarter sawn. Plus you can see all of the original limbs from the tree has it was growing up along that pith line.

On this one, we are all of the way through the knot now, but still have some of the figure. That’s really cool, I like that.

Again, very clear grain, with the exception of that bark inclusion.

So this was really fun! It’s nice to cut stuff that’s a little more normal and less difficult. This produced some very simple, clean grain. But the other four logs that Chad and Colten brought should yield some more unique things, which I’m looking forward to. They will be back soon, and we will be cutting up the larger crotch log. I’m excited to see what treasures are inside of there.

That’s going to do it for this one. Thank you, as always, for watching. I greatly appreciate it. If you have any questions or comments on the saw mill, please feel free to leave me a comment. As always, I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have. And until next time, happy woodworking.
