Making 2 Rooms Worth of Trim

Welcome back to the home renovation! The last couple updates have been about the flooring in the sunroom, breakfast nook, and kitchen, but this time Donavan is back to help finish up the great room. So today, we are starting on the trim for the great room and the office.

We have a few pieces here. These are the plans for our baseboards. We bought the shoe and cove mouldings, but we are going to be making everything else here. Pretty much all of it is going to come out of 1x6s and 1x8s, which we got cut up this morning.

This is the stack of boards for seven windows: six for the great room and one for the office. This is all chopped down to length, so now I’m going to take it to the shop and rip it all to width before making profiles on all of it.

We are starting with the four inch rips, which will give us the casing and the apron. With two guys and a power feeder, we can make pretty quick work of it.

We’ll use the offcuts to make these little bead details that go on the head casing.

All of our pieces are ripped (just like Donavan). That power feeder really made this quick!

Now we will work on the casing and the apron, which has the bead, which we will cut on this moulding machine from Donavan’s shop.

Here are the casings, with the bead on both sides, and the aprons, with the bead on one side. So those are off the list now!

Next up, we’re on to the sills. One side gets an ogee profile, and we’ll put a router around the top to make a bullnose and a cove.

Meanwhile Donavan is working on the beads using this half-round bit.

Next up is the head casing, and when that’s finished, that takes care of all of the moulding we need for the window assemblies.

We have some time left today, so we are going to start on the baseboards assemblies, which includes the baseboard and the cap moulding.

These are the custom knives (including Donavan’s name engraved on them) which have our profile for the cap pieces. These knives bolt right on to the cutter head in Donavan’s moulding machine.

So we can run our cap pieces through and get the profile we need.

And that takes care of making all of the trim! Next time we will get started on the install and get the window assemblies made. Thank you, as always, for joining. I greatly appreciate it. If you have any questions on the trim or the home renovation in general, please feel free to leave me a comment. I’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have. And until next time, happy woodworking.
