Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – May 4, 2015

This week kicked off my shop cleaning and reorganization initiative.  I got started turning my scraps into cutting boards and I replaced the old bench that was under my tool cabinet.  Although I still have a lot of scraps to get rid of, the new cabinet is much better than my old bench storage wise.  I also started and completed a project that I have been wanting to do for a few years: a live face bench.  I’ve had that sawmill off cut in my shop for years now so it feels great to finally give that experiment a try.  I also continued putting the final touches on the secretary and it is almost ready for the big reveal.

  1. I really like that bark slab bench. The contrast of the finely finished surface with the rough bark is cool Is there any trick to keeping the bark from coming loose?
As your store goes, I am looking build a black powder rifle, and I’m looking for a 12/4 by about 10inch and 48-60 long.
Your youtube videos are great, and that secretary is really something.

    1. Thanks John! I applied a lot of lacquer to the bark to stiffen it and keep it from flaking off. The bark itself will stay attached to a log if the tree is cut in the fall or winter. The only thing I have in that dimension is cherry. Let me know if that would work and I’ll try to hunt down a piece for you. Thanks again!

  2. Matt,
Nice work there. Question about your shop bench/cabinet you built. What type of hardware did you use there for floor leveling? I see some on there, curious where you got them and how they are installed.
    Thanks,
    Mike
