Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – May 25, 2015

This week I continued my cutting board blank creation.  I have quite a large stack of cutting board blanks piled up and I am almost through all my scraps.  I started working on the bassinet as well.  I got started by creating the angled tenon joinery on the upper rails of the side assembly.  During the week, I also installed new brakes on my trailer and today I upgraded my planer.

  1. Matt I heard in your last post you were thinking of getting a helix head for your planner. Have you thought about carbide tipped blades ? I have seen them advertized and have been looking to try them because the helix heads are so expensive..

    1. Hey Ross, I haven’t really considered them to be honest. For the price of two sets of knives I could get a new head. Maybe the pricing gap is larger on smaller planers?

  2. I have a fifteen inch planer I can get a set of solid carbide blades for 150 and for a shelix head it would cost me 800 . That gets a little steeper for your 20 inch. If you found a cheaper head let me know I’m still not sure which route iwant to go. May just buy a good system to sharpen my hss blades.
