Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – July 25, 2018

This week I finished getting the mill reassembled to the point it was at last year before I disassembled it and was able to make a test cut. In the shop, I worked on the sideboard by finalizing the leg stock and cutting the grooves and mortises.

Oregon Black Walnut River Table by Matt

I’m Matt Hallman from Hallman woodworks I have a small wood shop in Southern Oregon. This is our Oregon Black Walnut river table. These were locally milled black walnut slabs with Wenge Bowties and back filled with west systems epoxy. We fabricated the base as well made out of 3×3 tube then powder coated flat black. It was a super special build and were very excited about it you can find us as hallman woodworks on instagram. The bench Is also made from the same tree just with wood legs.

Table and Chairs by Luke

My name is Luke and I designed and built this counter height table and chairs as my junior year carpentry project for shop class. It is made from walnut and maple. It used a lathe duplicator for the first time to complete all of the legs.  The project took all school year long in addition to countless hours of working on it at home too but it was all worth extremely fun.

Guitar by Mike

I just completed my first guitar project and there were a number of sources on youtube I used to learn techniques to get it done, and a number of your videos helped too. In particular, the mineral spirits grain preview trick caught a few glue spots I probably would have missed before dying it, so thanks for that! I think you’ll get a kick out of the wood used, a friend had a walnut log laying in his yard for 10 years before milling with a chainsaw. I have a planer and jointer so I cleaned it all up for him and scored the leftovers. The fretboard is Ipe which I got from my boat after replacing some trim. Link to some pictures are below.

Giant Adidas Shoe Box by JD

It’s made of 3/4” plywood and the graphics were done by a local shop here in Nashville.  It was color matched by one of my local Home Depot’s and they nailed it!  It was a fun project but time consuming.
