Matt’s Weekly Shop Update – July 12, 2017

I spent a few days last week in Houston.  Big thanks to the Woodworkers Club of Houston for inviting me to speak at their event.  I continued filming the highboy project in the shop and spent some time using the mill.

Nightstand by Ethan

I’ve been woodworking for 3 years now. I was inspired by your bow tie how to video that made me make this nightstand. Its made from walnut and cherry and all the wood was the off cuts that my local hardwood dealer threw out. I picked them up at no cost and made what I could with what they considered, junk.

Hall Table by Sean

I made this hall table to fit in a very specific location in our home between our kids bedrooms. With the strange offset of the bedroom doors, I decided to make a curved front to get the largest top size I could, but not get in the way of the doors. I hadn’t done much work involving curves, and I referenced your videos throughout the project. I was lost trying to dovetail the drawers until I found your video on making the gallery drawers for the secretary. Without that video, I’m pretty sure this project would still be sitting in the corner of my shop unfinished!
I created a curved template that I used to draw the shape of the top and as a pattern for the laminating form I made for the drawer fronts. I made a second lamination of sapele to cut all of my drawer joinery into. The table is made from walnut I picked up from my local hardwood dealer, along with maple and sapele for the drawer parts. I prefinished most parts with General Finishes Arm-R-Seal, which allowed me to achieve a much better finish than I ever have before.
The table fits perfectly (as it should) and I’m very pleased with how it turned out.

Vase by Nick

My Mother’s Day present this year.  About two hours start to finish (including finish of Shellac and paste wax).  Water is held by a tall shot glass that fits in the vase.
It kind of looks like a baseball bat, but not bad for my first vase/hollow form, and fourth lathe project overall.

River Coffee Table by Matt

Here is my “river” coffee table. I picked the cedar slab up the day that it was cut and slowly worked on it over the past 3 months. It is 48″L x 21 1/2″W x 16 1/2″H, with a 2″ thick beveled top. The tapered legs are splayed 10 deg in both directions and are mortised into maple cleats. The glass is tempered 1/4″ PPG Azuria and all of the voids are filled with black-tinted epoxy. Arm-R-Seal Satin for finish.
