Hope Chest by Kenny

I finished the hope chest for my friends wedding, my first ever build from rough cut lumber and black walnut. I decided on tung oil and poly for a finish. We also discussed all options and decided to have guest sign under the lid on the cedar lining with a sharpie. I had no idea it would turn out this nice and thought it would look tacky if people signed the top of it.

Picture Frame by Travis

My girlfriend is a photographer, so I make a lot a frames for her business. It’s not a fancy project but ever since the video you put out about paying attention to grain direction I’ve been getting some nice results. Small 5×7 Knotty Alder picture frame.

Segmented Bowl by Steve

I just made this bowl as a gift for my mom on Mother’s Day.  It was first try making a segmented bowl and one of my first few projects on the lathe at all.  In fact, I think its the first one on the lathe that I’ve actually finished.  I took inspiration from Frank Howarth, scaled it down to more manageable levels and went for it.  I used maple and walnut and spent about a week of evenings working on the project.  I even made a clamp set up just like Frank did.  I ran out of time before applying any finish so I just sanded it all the way up to 1500 grit on the lathe which gave it a nice shine and feel.  When I first started making the bowl I had trouble planning the size of the rings so I cut a plastic bowl in half on the bandsaw and used it as a full scale model and went from there.  I’m pretty happy with the outcome and my mom was pretty happy.

Hand Prints by Greg

Your Mother’s Day plaque reminded me of a project I made. I made 2 hand prints of my girls for my wife’s birthday. I trace their hands on a piece of paper for a pattern. Then I glued the patterns on 1/2″ white pine board. Then cut them out on the scroll saw. Then I glued the handprints on a 1/4 white pine backer board finished with Minwax Classic Grey stain. Then I made a frame from 3/4″ Hard Maple. I finished the project with Minwax Water Base Polycrylic finish.

Gardening Tools by Jake

I’m 15 years old, and have been woodworking for a year, and turning for 5 months. This is a set of gardening tools that I made my mom for Mother’s Day this year. They are made from paduk and maple, with cutting board conditioner and shellac as finishes. These are before and after pictures.
