In the shop this week, I got started on the perimeter inlay on the sofa table top.

Natural Edge Table by Skip and Jenny

“The table top is comprised of two 2 ½ inch (finished thickness) walnut natural edge slabs that came from the same tree. I squared off one edge of each and joined them with loose tenons. I left the natural edge on each of the sides of the slabs.  I constructed the trestle base with quarter-sewn white oak. I laminated two 8/4 boards for the base and vacuum-veneered quarter-sawn white oak veneer on the exposed joints. The top is held to the base with wooden brackets, slotted holes and screws to allow for wood movement. I actually assembled all the parts in our dining room so it will be a bear if we ever try to move this out of the house!I decided to add breadboard ends of white quarter-sawn oak attached with screws in oversized holes for wood movement. I plugged the recessed screw holes with ebony plugs. The quarter-sawn oak breadboard flowed nicely into the lighter-colored sap wood on the walnut.  By the way, we saved the little crotch opening on the one end of the table for a grandbaby to sit at.”
