Segmented Economy Bowls by Austin

I started making these segmented economy bowls about a month ago. This one is made from walnut and curly maple and is 11″x5.5″. I turned it on an old craftsman 9″x36 lathe from the 50’s that has a home made rider block on it to bring it to a 12″ capacity.

Greek Key Workbench by Mat

This bench is based loosely on the Benchcrafted split top Roubo plans, but I decided to make it a solid top and modified some of the dimensions to fit me and the space I am using the bench in. The entire bench is constructed out of Southern Yellow Pine which I purchased as Select  2x10x16′ boards. The lumber yard told me these are typically purchased as floor joists.  The bench top is laminated and ~4.5″ thick, and the base is joined with through mortise and tenon joints throughout. To dress it up a bit I hammer veneered the base in a straight grain walnut veneer and cut a Greek key motif in walnut and maple veneer using my chevalet du marqueterie. For the leg vise I used a simple vise screw purchased from Amazon and came up with an elegant way to  utilize a heavy duty drawer slide to restrict the chop to a linear motion.  I also purchased a really nice 8″ cast iron hand wheel with rotating handle from Elco Inc in Roseville Michigan which makes the operation of the vise so sweet! I finished the bench top and shelf with Watco BLO and the base with General Finishes Arm R Seal topcoat.

Mario End Grain Cutting Board by Greg

My son was recently married and him and his wife both enjoy video games.  So this Mario cutting board was my creation for them.
It is made of walnut, cherry, maple, and padauk. It is 20″ inches long and 18″ tall and 1 3/4″ thick. It was quite a challenge to glue up so I made a jig to hold it square as I was gluing it together and used it for the clamp up.  I also made my first router sled to get the cutting board flat after the glue up.  It has routed handles on the sides and end grain cherry feet. I finished it by letting it soak up mineral oil, and made a mineral oil/bees wax paste to top it off.

Jewelry Box by Peter

My mum turned 60 not so long ago and she has always wanted a nice jewellery  box so I thought I would “attemp” to make one for her. Her favourite colour is purple so seemed a good opportunity to use Purple Heart for the first time. This IS NOT a friendly wood for beginners! Ha ha
The jewellery box is made from purpleheart and Zebrano with a buffed wax finish. The lid is zebrano with a purpleheart hoarder and Purple Heart inlay. The box itself is simple mitred corners with a zebrano spline. The feet were actually added afterwards as when I was finishing it I had it elevated and I liked it so added feet. It’s by no means perfect and there’s loads of little things that I could of done better but that’s what practice is for I guess.

  1. Good God… I’m halfway through the shop update and the only things I remember are ‘whoa, the baby almost headplanted onto that mallet on the floor… and he’s got some other hammers now…. whoop… he’s gonna be a giant wood dust bunny… now walking around the shop in bare feet…. aaaaand out comes the aerosol spray cans and glue.’
I am pretty sure, though, I see you having a harder and harder time keeping a straight face while filming… pretending you don’t know what’s going on behind you.
    Nice update.
