This week we’re pulling the encapsulated slab from the form, sawing some really thin wide slabs, and taking a look at Wagner Meter’s new Orion Moisture Meters.

VIEWER PROJECTS

Side Tables by Gary

Two small side tables made from rescued oak beams and floorboards. A local building was constructed around 1520 and some of the timbers have to be replaced. It’s proving quite difficult to find large useable pieces because anything that can be put back into the building is being saved. Most other pieces are really only good enough for small turnings like the matchstick holder to hold 300mm matches (£1 coin for scale). The restoration has not completed yet so I’m hoping for some choice pieces to make something a little larger.  Both tables are 400x400x400 (around 16″ square) and the matchstick holder is 250×90, around 10″x3.5″. I’m from the Midlands in the UK. The peacock is just a visitor.

Workbench by Jesse

I built this work bench from juniper logs that had been in a forest fire and stood dead for 10 years before my dad cut them down for fire wood, I milled them all with a small electric chainsaw free hand, then flattened them with a router sled and planer, took them to a friends house to joint the boards for the top. I hand cut the mortise and tenons for the legs in the office in our apartment. The front and back braces are maple and joined with sliding dovetails, the cross braces are blind mortise and tenon. All of the joints are pinned with oak dowels. Filled the voids in the top with epoxy and then finished with danish oil.

Entertainment Center by Larry

I am attaching a picture of an entertainment center I just finished.  I sorted through my stack of Hickory and used the brown straight grained boards for the top and sides, and the light colored boards for door panels.  The center panel has a barrister hinge and a large knot that needed to be expoxy filled (thanks again!)  It became the focal point of the piece.  The stiles and rails are walnut – I found out the hard way that hickory kind of sucks for chopping mortises.  The entire piece was finished with 3 coats of Arm R Seal satin.

Cutting Board Counter Top by Tim

This is a nearly 40 inch end-grain cutting board counter top for a kitchen island.  Coming in at almost 80 lbs, it is made of hard maple, with an end-grain Cherry compass rose inlay of my own design.  It’s still taking oil after 6 bottles 🙂
